Tyler Perry is an actor, comedian, writer, director, and producer based in America, known most for his character Madea and her adventures through theatre and film. His accolades span across award winning films, plays, and books. Born in New Orleans, Perry survived a traumatic childhood, and was inspired by Oprah Winfrey to channel his pain into creativity. In 2011, Forbes listed Perry as the top paid man in entertainment.
Throughout the 90’s and early 2000’s Perry worked tirelessly to bring his dreams to life. After his inspiration from Oprah to channel his energy into his creativity, Perry began writing and producing theatrical productions. After many long nights, and investing everything he had into his efforts, he found some commercial success and began touring the urban theatre circuit. From his earnings in the theatrical productions, Perry invested his profits into producing his first film Diary of a Mad Black Woman which grossed $50.6 million dollars.
In 2012, things came full circle for Perry as he signed an exclusive deal with the Oprah Winfrey network to bring scripted television to the network. Tyler Perry works with Lion’s Gate Entertainment for co-production and distribution, while his company Tyler Perry Productions holds the rights.
